Restructure police oversight committees so that they play a meaningful role in building public trust.
- Position them as liaisons for communities who are not comfortable seeking out the police for assistance with public safety issues in their community.
- Integrate this feedback into data analysis models to inform and guide police activity.
- Maintain oversight and review responsibilities for high-stakes investigations (i.e., officer-involved shootings, in-custody of death, use of force, etc). Minimize or eliminate their involvement in low-level complaints (i.e., courtesy, procedure, no-complaint memos, etc).
Develop partnerships with academic institutions to develop research on public safety issues, with the intention of using the information to help inform and guide police activity and service to neighborhoods.
Stop using social media to portray peace officers as friendly and harmless. Maintain authority, protection, service, and ethics as our value to the community.
Take back the narrative around law enforcement as one of drama and sensationalism by reporting on the actual impacts we have on the community. Use operational intelligence to this end.
